Belated Summer Birthday Shortcake

My dear Mette’s birthday was last Saturday, and since I seem to have “issues” with “remembering people’s birthdays,” (Sis, I said I was sorry like 7,000 TIMES! And you were in Hawaii that week anyway!!) we celebrated it Monday night, with interesting gifts like a hamburger kitchen timer, and a massive Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake, the official dessert of belated summers and belated birthdays.

The recipe is from Epicurious, and the kicker is that you make one huge shortcake instead of a bunch of little ones, which makes for excellent shortcake drama when it’s presented, because who doesn’t gasp in awe /delight/gastrointestinal dismay when presented with a birthday shortcake the size of their head?*

The shortcake has bits of bittersweet chocolate in it (I used Scharffen Berger’s 70% Bittersweet baking bar), and loads of organic whipped cream, and fresh strawberries, obviously. After an extensive tasting of the berries on hand at the newly opened Portland Farmers Market at downtown’s Pioneer Courthouse Square, I chose Unger Farms‘ terrifically sweet berries to represent the Fragaria × ananassa.

I think Mette liked it.

* Again, Sis, I’m sorry. This year I will make you a baked Alaska the size of your riding lawnmower!
