Pasties and Pig Ale at Coalition Brewery

After a long wait for Coalition Brewing Company to open on SE Ankeny & SE 28th (in the old Noble Rot space), Buckman neighborhood beer drinkers got their wish last week. I stopped by the new brewpub this afternoon for a midday snack.

coalitionextJust off the beaten SE 28th path, Coalition’s a quiet spot to while away a few summer afternoon hours, tucked halfway down the 2700 block of SE Ankeny, a stone’s throw from perma-busy Crema Café. A handful of sidewalk tables are privy to both expansive shade and the cheery bright red walls of Esparza’s, directly across the street.

coalitionpigaleThere are three Coalition beers on the tap list–Mr. Pig’s Pale, Bump’s Bitter ESB, and King Kitty Red. There’s also one visiting beer, which is part of the brewery’s “Coalator Program,” where they let a local homebrewer brew and sell a pilot batch of their beer on the premises, and then the pub’s regulars will vote on their favorite and that brewer will be invited to brew on Coalition’s 10 BBL system. The current Coalator is Northwest IPA, courtesy of brewer Jeremy Morton-Maxson, manager of F.H. Steinbart, a Portland homebrew supply store.

The pub’s interior is warm and inviting, with a few sturdy wooden tables, plenty of bar seating, and framed pictures of hops and other brewing necessities/equipment on the wainscotted walls.

The wine list is brief but geographically diverse, and reasonably priced.

The food menu offers a few interesting drinking snacks like Texas Caviar and MMM’s (Miniature Meat Muffins), and there are a dozen or so salads, paninis, and sandwiches, plus a “Biggie Smalls” section that includes Mac ‘n Cheese and a Ploughman’s Lunch meat, cheese and bread board.

coalitionhandpieOn the blackboard behind the bar are a few specials–today’s were hummus and gazpacho, and a small selection of delicious Pacific Pie Company pasties. I ordered the samosa handpie–a fragrant, savory blend of curried peas, carrot and potatoes. It was hot and spicy, a nice accompaniment to a cold pint of Mr. Pig’s Pale Ale.

coalitiontunameltMy dining companion ordered the Tuna Melt, a tasty hot mess of Oregon albacore, sharp yellow cheddar, and sliced tomatoes. His comment was “It’s almost as good as yours,” which was suspicious because to my knowledge I’ve never made him a tuna melt.

In conclusion, I’d say Coalition Brewery is a nice addition to the Buckman ‘hood and a comfortable spot to sip beer or wine and eat handpies on a summer afternoon, and I’d also say that my dining companion is quite possibly a cad.
