I’m driving up North Russell Street, past the White Eagle Saloon, past 820 Lounge and Mint Restaurant, when suddenly–I feel it in my fingers. I feel it in my toes. Pie is somewhere around me, and so the feeling grows. Then I spy with my little eye the Russell Street Gallery and Pie Diner on the north side of the street. What’s this? I ask. A gallery with pie? Naturally, I go in, my spiedey senses on full alert. And indeed, all the way in the back corner, behind a $15,000 Edward D’Ancona oil painting of a naughty looking girl in a red dress and a bench made of what looks like giant licorice buttons, I find a little coffee counter serving Illy coffee, Two Leaves and a Bud tea, quiche, breakfast bagels and biscuits, hot oatmeal, sandwiches, paninis, salads, soups and none other than pie! Homemade apple pie with a hazelnut crust and Chantilly cream, pear cranberry pie, apple pie with a crumbly cheddar-strewn streusel topping, rich coconut pie in a light, buttery crust with a thick layer of whipped cream sprinkled with toasted coconut. So if you really love pie, get on over to Russell Street Pie Diner and let it show.

Cupcakes come in two sizes—regular and dots (2-3 bites), and in an entire palette of beautiful colors and match-made-in-heaven flavors–from traditional vanilla and chocolate with buttercream and cream cheese icings, to old favorites like carrot cake and red velvet, to five kinds of vegan cupcakes, to more exotic toasted coconut cream with vanilla toffee cake, fudgey chocolate cupcakes topped with malt balls, and the legendary Fat Elvis—banana chocolate chip cupcake frosted with peanut butter chocolate chip icing. There is only one thing wrong with Saint Cupcake–both locations are closed on Mondays. Why did I decide to write this on a Monday? WHY!?!

That’s what it’s like to meet Miss Zumstein, aka, Anja Spence, baker extraordinaire and truly lovely person. Anja has been baking up a storm for the past 15 years, supplying Portlanders with beautiful individualized wedding and special event cakes, and filling local pastry cases with her delicious pies and tartlets. She also specializes in tasty little things–profiteroles, tea cookies, mini cupcakes, lemon cream tartlets, marzipan petit fours, cappucino brownies, hand-rolled chocolate truffles, lemon-scented shortbread, coconut mararoons, and Mexican wedding cake cookies, among so many others. If you believe that you are what you eat, you’ll be wanting to call Miss Zumstein’s, because every tasty morsel comes baked with love. And in case you’re wondering what that silver fondant beauty in the picture is, it happens to be my stunning scorpion birthday cake from last year. Chocolate, of course.

I’ve never been very sensitive when it comes to my vegan friends. I’m constantly forgetting their convictions and erroneously bringing them custard fruit tarts in my excitement over the first fresh strawberry tartlets of summer, bragging about the new triple cream I found, callling them from the dairy I’m doing a feature story on to gush about the fresh sheep’s milk I just drank. They are very gracious about my egregious faux pas’, but I’m always looking for a way to make it up to them. So, every now and then, I pop into Sweet Pea Baking Company to get them a little something special. With 48 hours notice, Sweet Pea can make you a batch of gorgeous vegan cupcakes or a splendid gluten-free cake, in yummy flavors like Lemon, Coconut, Oatmeal Spice, Carrot, Banana, and German Chocolate, with beautiful bright pink raspberry frosting or peanut butter. Yep, nothing says I’m sorry for being an insensitive omnivore like a cake from Sweet Pea.

They will sell you one of their fantastic seasonal fruit pies–blueberry, raspberry, marionberry and peach in the summer; apple in the fall; pumpkin and bourbon pecan for the holidays ($14.95 each)–either already baked if you’re en route to a party, or frozen and oven-ready, so that you can put your pie in the oven before dinner and have warm fresh pie for dessert. If you want to fill your own pie, but would like to bypass the laborious crust making and rolling process, Grand Central understands. For $6.95 you can buy two already rolled out discs of pie dough that fit a standard 9″ pie pan, or if you don’t own a pie pan, for $4.95 you can purchase a pie shell in the tin. See? Grand Central has thought of everything. You have absolutely no excuse for not eating pie tonight.

They had a bad experience with sheet cake as a child, they come all unglued when confonted with a fruit cake filling, or, worst and most incomprehensible of all– they don’t like chocolate cake. These people are hard to shop for when birthdays roll around, because all you really want to buy them is a 10-session series of Cake Therapy. But never fear, Bakery Bar is here. Fruit filling phobia or not, how can someone not love a Sour Cream Citrus Poppy Seed cake with raspberry curd and vanilla buttercream? Sure, somone can say they’re just not that into cake, but what if it’s Banana Bourbon Cake with chocolate-bourbon mousse and brown sugar buttercream? Can even the most devout of chocolate cake haters really find it in their hearts to turn down a piece of Orange Olive Oil cake with dark chocolate mousse and honey buttercream frosting? Help the cake-phobic in your life confront their psychological cake demons head on, maybe with the help of a Devil’s Food layer cake with espresso-chocolate truffle filling and a coffee buttercream cap. Cakes start at $28 for a 6″ round layer cake, and require 3 days notice but in a cake pinch, you can run in and get an exquisite little 4″ round layer cake to go for $18.

Whiffies Fried Pies has built up quite a fanbase since hanging up their shingle at the SE Hawthorne & SE 12th Avenue late-night food cart cluster. Maybe its the masked and red cape-wearing little pieman-on-a-plate mascot, maybe its the highly competitive fried pie eating contests, maybe it’s the linguistic joy of wrapping your lips around the word Whiffies, maybe it’s just that there might not be a better food than a piping hot, moon-shaped sweet or savory hand pie that’s been fried, wrapped in foil, and placed into your eager possession 10 seconds later. Savory fried pies like BBQ Beef and Salmon with Chipotle Mayonnaise and Chicken Pot Pie, BBQ Tofu pies, vegan-friendly fried pies, and the hot gooey fruit fried pies that will rock your late night world–Apple, Lemon, Cherry, Blueberry, Coconut Cream, Peach, Chocolate. And now that summer is here and you’re looking for an excuse to take a late evening stroll, you can incorporate Whiffies into your nightly exercise routine, and not feel a bit guilty about your new fried pie habit.

Strawberry Rhubarb pie, Brandied Peach pie, Flirty Berry pie, Oregon Cherry pie, Kentucky Pecan pie, Coconut Cream pie, Maple Nutmeg pie, Banana Rum pie, Irish Coffee Cream pie, Peach Berry Amaretto pie, Rhubarb Cardamom pie, Lemon Meringue pie, and good Old Fashioned Apple pie.
