Bakery Bar
Sometimes, when I tell people I’m taking them to lunch at Bakery Bar, their faces twist in confusion. I’m taking them where? Is it a bakery, or a bar? Intrigue sets in: Is it possible that it could be both? Then their faces begin to radiate joy and wonder: a bakery + a bar? This could possibly be the best idea in the universe!
Luscious coconut crème, rich and bold espresso gingerbread, moist carrot five-spice cake or playful banana bourbon—these exquisite little cakes are even dreamier than a bakery bar…
Have a glass of wine, a beer, or a cocktail with one of BB’s remarkable sandwiches (the Black Forest ham and Brie with sweet hot mustard and butter is one of my favorite sandwiches in the city), or crisp, deliciously inventive salads. BB’s hot housemade soups are particularly satisfying on a drizzly Portland day—the chili is chunky, slightly spicy, and served with scrumptious jalapeno cornbread, and it’s a crime to leave the premises without having ordered at least one of each shortbread cookie in the jars by the cash register, lemon rosemary is a standout.
Bakery Bar bakes beautiful custom cakes made to order, or walk in anytime and snatch up a 4-inch round double-decker cakelet—luscious coconut crème, rich and bold espresso gingerbread, moist carrot five-spice cake or playful banana bourbon—these exquisite little cakes are even dreamier than a bakery bar.
You can’t miss Bakery Bar’s Northeast shop as you make your way down NE Glisan–it’s painted a wildly bright orange and sports a beautiful patio area with glossy new picnic tables and stainless steel horse troughs converted into mini urban garden oases. Free wi-fi flows freely, so get a cinnamon-pecan scone and a cappuccino and stay a while.
