Portland Nursery Apple Tasting October 2011

applefestThis year’s cool and wet spring and summer had us wondering about the availability of apples and pears for this year’s event, as fruit ripening slowed to a crawl. But warmer weather arrived, things have picked up a pace, and we will have more than fifty varieties of apples and pears to taste this year, as well as plenty for sale by the pound. And again, many are heirloom varieties that you are likely to see only here!

There will once again be a full roster of activities and attractions for you to enjoy; some new additions and some very special community activities that you can participate in with us.

Friday-Sunday October 14, 15, 16, 2011

Activities for kids – includes a hands-on healthy snack-making activity with CookingThyme, new this year, we’re excited they’re here! Friday October 21 – Elementary School Field Trip Day
Though the tasting line is open and the cider press is churning, be aware that we are also visited by hundreds of elementary school kids until about 2:00 p.m. The vendors take this day off; the kids’ activity tent is closed, but we do have special puppet and juggling performers for the kids on that day.

Elder Day – Wednesday, October 19, 1-5 pm.
Co-sponsored by Portland Nursery, Home Instead and Friends of Portland Memory Garden, this is our 7th year for this special afternoon. Hands-on activity tables will be staffed by horticultural therapists and interns; a selected apple tasting; cider press demonstrations; volunteers and nursery staff on hand to help with shopping. Live music from 2-4 p.m. with Mike Danner Trio (classic jazz and period music that was a big favorite last year). Plenty of covered space, so it will be fun, rain or shine.

Weekends, as always, take on a crazy life their own:
Live music from some of the best local bands. Download the pdf -Apple Tasting for your Ears!
Cooking demonstrations – yum!
Face-painting, crafts, hula hoops and a scavenger hunt for the kids
And this year we’re thrilled to have Hot Lips Pizza here, oven fired up, when you’re ready for something more than apples and strudel!

Every year a portion of the proceeds of apple and pear sales benefits Elders in Action. This year, we are inviting you to help us support their program addressing the issue of hunger among elders, including the fantastic Bob’s Community Garden Project, which has already helped provide two thousand pounds of fresh, organic produce to seniors in need! How can you help? Donate to this worthy cause, and Portland Nursery will match the first $1,000 of your donations!

Looking forward to an abundant and generous event – rain or shine!
